The Victron Argo 160-2AC battery isolator (MPN ARG160201020) enables the distribution of charge from a single power source (e.g., alternator) to two battery circuits.

Battery isolator diodes allow two separate battery circuits to be charged from a single power source. This means that the batteries do not need to be connected to each other, which greatly simplifies the installation of these isolator diodes and even saves on installation costs.

technical features

  • The Argo series uses state-of-the-art Schottky diodes to keep voltage loss as low as possible
  • features a current-limiting connection for starting the generator (e.g., alternator, generator)
  • The Argo 160-2AC model delivers a maximum charging current of 160A and can serve 2 separate batteries or battery banks
  • The maximum current of the alternator is also 160A. This means, for example, that the vehicle battery can be charged without simultaneously discharging the starter battery.

minimal voltage loss thanks to the latest Schottky diodes

The use of modern Shottky diodes also keeps voltage loss to a minimum. It is approx. 0.3 V at low currents and approx. 0.45 V at rated current. All models in the Victron Argo series are equipped with a compensation diode, which slightly increases the output voltage of the alternator to compensate for the voltage loss caused by the Schottky diodes. This is important because if the isolating diode is connected to the wiring between the alternator and the battery without further measures, a voltage loss occurs, which leads to incomplete charging and premature aging of the battery.

current-regulating alternator connection
Some types of generators require a DC voltage at the B+ terminal for start-up excitation. On the one hand, there is a direct cable connection between the battery and the generator. On the other hand, however, the isolating diode prevents the current from flowing back, so that the generator does not start up. The Argo Diode from model 80-2AC onwards has a special connection for start-up excitation when the generator is started and ensures a smooth current flow between the generator and the battery.
